Question

Buckingham Palace reports that Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, have had a baby girl, thus giving Queen Elizabeth II her second great-grandchild.

  1. Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, have had a baby girl, thus giving Queen Elizabeth II her second great-grandchild
  2. Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, have had a baby girl giving Queen Elizabeth II her second great-grandchild
  3. Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, have had a baby girl, making her Queen Elizabeth II’s second great-grandchild
  4. Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, have had a baby girl, thus making Queen Elizabeth II a great-grandmother twice over
  5. Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, have had a baby girl who is Queen Elizabeth II’s  second great-grandchild

Correct Answer : Choice A

Explanatory Answer

  1. Correct.  The event of the birth of the child has given the Queen her second great-grandchild.
  2. The baby girl has not given the Queen her second great-grandchild.
  3. The pronoun  her is ambiguous, it can refer to both Autumn and to the baby girl.
  4. Convoluted sentence construction.
  5. The inference is that Peter Phillips and Autumn have had a baby girl who is the second great-grandchild which distorts original intent.

I do agree with all the ideas you have presented in your post. They’re really convincing and will certainly work. Still, the posts are very short for newbies. Could you please extend them a little from next time? Thanks for the post..
